British Business Federation Authority

What we do

Our Mission is to enable the implementation and operation of federation capabilities in the UK, which are based on common policies, procedures and mechanisms for federated trust, and international standards.   The scope is for employees within and across regulated UK industry sectors, including interoperability with HMG, in a manner that does not preclude the citizen.

The scope of the BBFA covers major areas necessary for secure collaboration:

  • Federated identity and access management.  Authentication, Authorisation, Accountability, Accreditation  and Audit
  • Enterprise Information Protection. Taxonomy generation; information classification and categorisation; information monitoring, routing and filtering, encryption policy enforcement.
  • Geo-data interoperability for location based services (LBS), geo-authentication and situational awareness.

We have a collaborative governance regime with Policy Management Authorities (PMAs) that produce Common Policy.  We have collaborative project teams which use the BBFA Common Policies and industry investment to implement Federation Capabilities, such as the UK PKI Bridge.  Competitive service providers can then use the Federation Capabilities to provide federation services to end-user organisations.
